Why Make Your Own?
Reduce Toxins: Traditional store bought air fresheners contain a myriad of chemicals that you spray into the air in your home and then you breathe them into your body. They are completely toxic and unhealthy. One of those chemicals is fragrance and while most people enjoy the way those sprays smell, fragrance is awful for you. It can causes issues to the endocrine system (think fertility issues) as well as cause cancer. It’s in so many of the things we use and this is one easy way to reduce your family’s exposure to those ingredients.
Essential Oils: EO’s are not only smell great, but they can have therapeutic properties when used in aromatherapy. This means using them in your room spray is a much better option than refreshing the air with a chemical-laden store bought spray.
Convenience: Making your own room spray is also very convenient. You don’t have to diffuse the oils which can take longer to permeate the entire room. If you are having company or need to freshen the air in a room quickly, you can spray it.
Cost Efficience: With only 3 ingredients to make them, room sprays made with essential oils are pretty inexpensive to make in comparison to the cost of the store-bought bottles with fragrance.
Creativity/Gifting: You can also control the scents you add to the room sprays so you can be creative and make a spray for every season or holiday or whatever you like. You can create them for others and gift them to friends and family.
Supplies Needed for Room Spray
- 4 oz Amber Bottles – You want a dark bottle to help your oils last longer. UV light can impact their quality.
- Small Stainless Steel Funnel – This is optional but if you’re like me, then you’ll need it!
- Witch Hazel – This acts as an emulsifier to mix the oils and water. You can also use isopropyl alcohol or vodka if you don’t have witch hazel.
- 15 – 30 drops Essential Oils or Oil Blends – I like to make my own blends and sometimes I like to make a spray using a blend that I purchased. The size of the bottle depends on the amount of drops.
- Distilled Water – Always use distilled water over tap to ensure there are no impurities being added. The water will help disperse the oils in the air and also help the stray last longer.
How to Make Christmas Room Spray with Essential Oils
- First you will add your essential oils of choice to the empty glass bottle.
- Next you will fill the bottle halfway with witch hazel.
- Next you will fill the bottle the rest of the way with the distilled water.
- Put the lid on, shake and test. Add more drops of essential oils if needed.
- Add a label so you know what scent it is and that it’s room spray!
Essential Oil Christmas Blends
Pre-made blends are super convenient because then you don’t have to make sure you have all the exact oils to create the scent you want. The Plant Therapy ones below are great choices and you can use these in your room spray, a diffuser and many other ways!
