As the calendar turns and a new year begins, it brings with it an opportunity to pause, reflect and intentionally decide where you want your life to go next.
After reflection, you will then focus on identifying key areas of your life you’d like to focus on to create habits, make changes, grow and move forward in. Why Is It Beneficial To Create Goals?
It’s important to create meaningful and intentional goals for yourself and your family to help stimulate change and growth in your life. There are many benefits that can come from the action of creating goals and taking steps towards achieving them.

How To Create Your Goals
Step 1 – Reflect on the past year – Take a moment to look back on the last year and note what went well, what was hard, what you want more or less of next year.
Step 2 – Choose key life areas – Instead of one giant list, group goals into categories.
Step 3 – Make specific (and realistic goals) – Vague goals are hard to follow, be very specific to your situation using the SMART goal method (details below)
Step 4 – Keep the list short – Aim for 5-10 main goals. Too many can be overwhelming and make it easier to give up.
Step 5 – Break big goals into small steps – Smaller goals are easier to manage and accomplish. Small wins build motivation.
Step 6 – Write them positively – Focus on what you want to do, not what you want to stop doing.

This goal, as all of them, can look very different for different people. I think it really encompasses learning in any aspect. For some this may be continued institutional education and for others, it might look like mastering a new skill.

- Take a first aid/CPR class
- Choose a book to read for each month
Home Environment
One of my personal focuses for goal setting is my home environment. As a mom of 2 young boys it’s important to me to create an intentional home environment. Sometimes the busyness of life gets in the way and we fall out of these habits that I feel are crucial for our family’s connectedness.
- Eat dinner at the table 5/7 nights
- Wake up earlier
- Read the Bible with your family daily
- Limit Screen time two 2 hours a day
- Family Meetings
- Get active together
Spiritual Goals
I believe spiritual goals are some of the most important you can create. Intentional spiritual goals can be the starting point for a closer walk with God. Here are some great ideas for you.
- Create a prayer room, wall, poster etc
- Commit to reading the Bible daily
- Start a new devotional
- Memorize Scripture
- Implement Fasting into your life
- Join/Lead a Bible study
- Become a mentor/obtain a mentor
- Volunteer at church
Relational Goals
I like to make goals for the most important relationships in my life. For me, that’s my husband and children. For you, that might be other people. But the idea is to make goals on ways to improve connections, communication and a grow the relationships.
Marriage Goals
- Weekly/Monthly Date Nights
- Increase intimate time
- Learn each other’s love language
- Explore a hobby together
- Plan a weekend away
Parent/Child Goals
- One-on-one dates with the kids to increase quality time
- Monthly Movie/Game Nights with the whole family
- Serve/Volunteer as a family
- 10 minute daily chats to sincerely connect
Financial Goals
We’re all aware that finances can be ever-changing based on life circumstances. It’s always a smart idea to add some financial goals to the list and there are a variety of different types of goals no matter what state your finances may be in.
- Create a specific plan to tackle debts
- Grow your savings – add a certain amount every week/month
- Open savings accounts for your children
- Donate to a charity
- Begin tithing at church
- Create a budget
- Open an IRA
- Plan out yearly vacation budgets
Social Goals
This key category is an interesting one. You can add social goals to the list whether you want to increase or decrease your amount of social (or social media) activity. Here’s a few ideas for both below.

- Say ‘no’ to extra or non-essential activities

Probably the most common of all new years goals fall under health and wellness. These are great goals to have because with some perseverance, they truly can transform into life changing habits. You may already have goal ideas in this area but here are some that might be a bit different than you’ve seen before but will be effective and potentially life-changing.
- Aim for daily movement
- Spend time in the sun daily
- Try grounding – get outside in the grass
- Make sleep a priority

What are SMART Goals?
SMART goals are a framework for effective goal setting. The acronym SMART is associated with letters of words that will guide you in creating realistic and achievable goals that you can actually reach.
Specific: Clarify the goal, answer the ‘what, why and how’ making sure goal is clear and specific.
Measurable: Define clear criteria for success, how progress will be tracked.

Timely: It is important to set a specific date to have the goal completed.
