Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

If you’re looking for a healthier hot chocolate recipe that tastes great and the kids will love, I’ve got you covered! I know it sounds a little weird, but bone broth hot chocolate is so worth the hype!  I’m always looking for healthier options for my family and this hot chocolate tastes so creamy and delicious that no one even notices I added a healthy ingredient, so that’s a win!

Why Add Bone Broth?

My kids always want a warm and cozy drink during the holiday season so I wanted to find a healthier hot chocolate. The ingredients in common hot chocolate brands on the market are terrible. Most are non-organic, full of sugar and other toxic junk.  I found that making my own and incorporating bone broth into hot chocolate was an easy way to add nutrition. Not only that, but it tastes amazing and is both kid and husband approved!

Benefits of Bone Broth

Bone broth is full of nutrients that bring health and healing to the body. If you can make your own, that’s ideal because it’s going to be the most nutritional. But if you can’t, no worries because there are some higher quality brands out there that I trust. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should add bone broth to your hot chocolate!

Improves Gut Health – Bone broth contains amino acids that help soothe inflammation and irritation in the digestive system, which can help to heal the gut.

Fights Inflammation – These same amino acids also help fight inflammation in the body.

Improves Sleep – The amino acid, glycine is found in bone broth and may promote deeper and more restorative sleep.

Improves Skin Health – Bone broth contains collagen which is essential for maintaining elasticity in the skin.

Improves Immunity – The minerals and amino acids in bone broth work together to build healthier cells, thus boosting the immune system.

Bone Broth Hot Chocolate Ingredients

Chicken Bone Broth – It’s always preferable to make your own, but if that’s not possible, be sure to choose a high quality bone broth. Keep in mind that that beef bone broth creates a stronger flavor so I prefer to stick with chicken. You can also use a powdered bone broth if you prefer.

Raw Milk – You can use any milk of choice, but trust me, raw milk makes this bone broth hot chocolate very yummy! I purchase raw milk from a local farm. If you are interested in finding raw milk in your area, use this raw milk finder. If you prefer to purchase milk from the store, this is the closest to raw milk you will come.

Heavy Whipping Cream – If you are dairy free, feel free to omit this ingredient, but heavy whipping cream does add an extra level of creaminess to your hot chocolate.

Cacao Powder or Raw Fermented Cacao – Cacao powder has it’s own benefits over other standard chocolates you could add. It’s full of antioxidants that can help boost mood and benefit your hearth health. It will give a strong chocolatey taste, and it can be rich, so the next 2 ingredients are key!

Maple Syrup – Maple syrup is a healthier option than plain sugar and isn’t overpowering. It will help tame down the richness of the cacao powder. It’s great if you can find it locally, but there are some good store bought options.

Vanilla Extract – Vanilla extract will add a hint of sweetness and flavor. It’s even better if you can make your own.

How to Make Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

Step 1 – Gather a saucepan and a whisk along with the necessary ingredients.

Step 2 – Add the bone broth and milk to a saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Be sure not to boil.

Step 3 – Once it reaches a simmer, add the heavy whipping cream, cacao powder, maple syrup and vanilla extract.

Step 4 –  Continue to stir with a whisk until all ingredients are dissolved.

Step 5 – You are ready to serve and add in whatever fun things you’d like!

Yummy Optional Add-In’s

There are so many fun things you can add into your hot chocolate and the kids always want some of these. Here are some ‘better’ brands of some of those traditional add-in’s.

Whipped cream – Apart from making your own, it’s very difficult to find a clean whipped cream. This is an ‘ok’ choice.

Marshmallows – Dandies makes a cleaner marshmallow and that’s what we use for convenience!

Chocolate Chips – If you prefer a dairy free chocolate chip, these are a great option.

Cinnamon – Cinnamon is a great addition to hot chocolate to add some flavor and help regulate blood sugar.

Cayenne – Cayenne powder is my personal favorite. If you like a spicy hot chocolate, this is for you!

Candy Canes – My kids love to add in candy canes to their hot chocolate and I found a great organic version.

Peppermint Extract – If you don’t have any candy canes handy, this is a great alternative.

Collagen Powder – Bone broth does provide collagen naturally, but feel free to add another scoop to your hot chocolate!

I hope you and your family will enjoy this healthy bone broth hot chocolate as much as my family does!
